ExploreMusic » Shows » Ongoing History of New Music15 May 2012 | 8:18 amIf you watched the broadcast of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ April 14th induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you might have noticed the absence of Dave Navarro, who was the guitarist with the Chili Peppers for five years and played on 1995′s One Hot Minute, and Jack Sherman, who replaced founding Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak between ’83 and ’85 and is featured on their self-titled debut album. Hero Unsung – Frankie Miller
14 May 2012 | 11:45 amOn the weekend I got turned on to an artist with whom I wasn’t particularly familiar until now and am thrilled to finally get to know his stuff, and share with you. Joining a list of incredible Scots who rock, (Angus and Malcolm Young and Bon Scott from ACDC, Dan McCafferty of Nazareth, Alex Harvey from The Sensational Alex Harvey Band), Frank Miller hails from Scotland too. An altar boy who also played football, it was Frankie Miller’s love of the latter, he got honestly, from his mom’s dad, Archie Kyle, who was one of the first Catholic football players signed to Glasgow… -
Reactions to MCA’s passing
14 May 2012 | 9:30 amBeastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch died from cancer on May 4th, 2012, and even someone who’d never heard of the band would know just how loved MCA was based on the outpouring of appreciation that has been coming from fans. Here are a few examples of reactions from musicians in the rock world: Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke said that when his band was just starting out, they looked up to the Beastie Boys, and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts that Adam started back in 1996 inspired him, and the way that Adam conducted himself impressed him. Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and…

The Final Conversation between Duane and Gregg Allman
11 May 2012 | 10:45 amI’m going to get my copy of ‘My Cross to Bear’, out the first of May, featuring Gregg Allman’s story of the life and times of he and his big brother’s band. Duane Allman was taken in 1971 when he swerved to avoid hitting a truck and crashed his Harley. In the book, Gregg recounts the last conversation he had with Duane that morning before the accident. Would you believe it was about cocaine? And would you believe the last thing Gregg ever said to his brother was a lie? For more on this story, click through to spinner.ca -
The Legend of Led Zeppelin and Elvis Presley
11 May 2012 | 8:25 amEveryone talks about Elvis’ affinity for peanut butter sandwiches. Food was clearly not The King’s only obsession. You see, Presley, had a habit of checking out men’s wrists to see what sort of time piece they were wearing. He also happened to have been a fan of Led Zeppelin. It’s a story that takes us back to the 10th of May1974, when Elvis played a show at the Los Angeles Forum. Zeppelin, already having seen him perform previously in Las Vegas, weren’t about to pass up another chance to see him in concert, however, having been up the previous night partying… -
Alex Lifeson of Rush on Pete Townshend
9 May 2012 | 9:00 amIf you had to pick just one? Mine would be ‘The Real Me’, or ‘Who Are You’, or ‘The Seeker’, or … Different mood, different day, different song. The May, 2011 issue of the UK’s Classic Rock magazine is a special collector’s edition featuring the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time as chosen by rock’s greatest songwriters including Rush’s Alex Lifeson, who’s choice was Pete Townshend: … “The Who were always a major influence on everything that Rush ever did, from the very start. While I’d never question…

Guns N’ Roses movie in the works?
11 May 2012 | 7:39 amIf Matt Sorum gets his wish, there’ll b a Guns N’ Roses movie. Matt, who drummed for the band from 1990 to 1997, says that he’s had talks with “a couple of really big people” about writing a screenplay for a film that will tell the GN’R story, and that “the only problem with that is figuring out how to work out the music situation.” Matt doesn’t think that rock and roll movies have ever been done right, with the exception of the 1991 movie, “The Doors,” and the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, “Walk the Line.” Now, the big question: what… -
Linkin Park back to their roots
10 May 2012 | 7:44 amLinkin Park’s forthcoming album will have some sounds that might remind listeners of Hybrid Theory or Meteora, but that doesn’t mean that the band has taken a step backwards. While making their last two albums, Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, they dismissed anything that had that “Linkin Park sound,” but according to vocalist Chester Bennington, they now have the skills and the tools to “take elements of that, reinvent the vibe, and make it now and fresh.” Vocalist and co-producer Mike Shinoda has said that the new record has captured a feeling that they haven’t… -
Gotye: “Come on guys, there are other songs out there”
9 May 2012 | 7:42 amGotye has admitted that he sometimes feels a bit sick of his own massive hit, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” On any given day, there are five covers or parodies or remixes of “Somebody That I Used to Know” in his inbox, and while he does like the fact that people are still discovering it, he sometimes feels like saying to people, “come on guys, there are other songs out there.” As for whether or not he can follow up “Somebody That I used to Know” with something as successful, Gotye says that he doesn’t know whether he can or whether he wants to.
